Grace Notes October 20 , 2008

Dear Auntie, Dear Uncle,

Schools are back in session after their end-of-first-quarter break --- all mentors should be meeting with their kids by now or, at least by the end of this month. If you haven't connected with your kid, please talk to your church coordinator!

Why do we do this? Please read the following story ... Kenneth Lo was a foreign exchange student from Hong Kong who lived with our Jarman family for 2 years. During that time, Kenneth became like a member of the family, he did his share of the chores and received the same weekly allowance as the other 3 boys. He attended Kaimuki Christian Church with us, and (this is so wonderful) became acquainted with Jesus of Nazareth to the point that he learned to love Jesus and wished to be baptized. His parents -- not Christians (yet) -- supported Kenneth's decision and we had a beautiful beach baptism around the time of K's graduation from High School so his Mom and Dad could be here to see him immersed. It was great! Now, I'm getting to the part about "why we mentor kids". Two weeks ago I borrowed a pick-up truck and helped Kenneth move into a different apartment. After the move, I bought him a chicken sandwich at Jack In The Box. I looked at him and asked him, "Kenneth do you know why I helped you move and why I bought you that chicken sandwich?" "Yes, Uncle Jay, you help me because you love me." That's why.

One last thing --- we made a better "Parental Permission Form" which the parent/guardian signs when you take your kids out to the zoo or to a movie or someplace. You can get it on our website under "Resources".

Jay
