Sacred Hearts – Loving Hearts
A few months ago we were approached by the Principal of Sacred Hearts Academy, a fine private Catholic preparatory school for girls. She told us one of Sacred Hearts alumni is now the principal of a public school in Palolo Valley. This school has an abundance of Pacific Island immigrants to Hawaii who are struggling with learning English and scrambling to adjust to life in America’s 50th State. “Could Common Grace train high school girls at Sacred Hearts Academy to come and be big-sister-mentors for the younger children?”
Okay, sure. How many kids need a big-sister to spend an hour with them each week talking-story, reading together and playing together? “50” Did you say 50? Yes, about 50. Okay, 50.
FIFTY!
They want us to go to the private high school and train fifty young volunteers to go to the public elementary school and pay loving attention to fifty lonely kids.
This is a challenge we are delighted to accept. We’ll let you know how it all turns out once the next school year gets started. |
